Monica Legatt obtained her Washington State acupuncture license in 1997 after graduating from The Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, now part of Bastyr University. As an undergraduate Monica graduated with honors from The University of Puget Sound where she studied East Asian philosophy and culture and was first exposed to Taoism, the foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Monica also obtained a Masters degree in Teaching Arts and her certification in elementary education grades K-8 and high school English grades 9-12 from the University of Puget Sound. As an educator Monica enjoys explaining the Chinese Medicine diagnosis and treatment plan to each of her patients in clear and understandable terms.

Monica has been board certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine since obtaining her license to practice in 1997. Practitioners such as Monica who keep their NCCAOM diplomate standing current demonstrate an exceptional commitment to professional development and continual refinement of their clinical skills by voluntarily completing 15 hours of continuing education every year. Washington State requires no continuing education for maintaining an acupuncture license: only current NCCAOM diplomats voluntarily hold themselves to this high standard.

Monica has specialized training in the areas fertility, obstetrics and gynecology, emotional and psychological conditions, neuro-musculo-skeletal injuries and neurological conditions. She has worked successfully with thousands of patients since beginning practice, giving her extensive clinical experience. Some of her esteemed Chinese Medicine teachers include Giovanni Maciocia (obstetrics/gynecology/fertility, emotional and psychological conditions), and Dr. Ming Qing Zhu, innovator of Zhu's scalp acupuncture system for neurological disorders, paralysis and pain. She has training in the treatment of infertility from The Jade Institute in Seattle and reproductive endocrinologists Dr. Michael Opsahl and Klaus Wiemer.

Monica is a previous president of the Acupuncture Association of Washington where she was the chair of the Health Insurance Committee. Her focus was advocating for the coverage of acupuncture by Washington state insurance companies. At this time Washington state insurance companies must cover acupuncture treatments for medically necessary diagnoses.

Monica's personal style of acupuncture is highly effective, as her patient testimonials repeatedly state. You will enjoy working with Monica because she explains everything comprehensively to each patient and her clinical outcomes are excellent.

Success Conceiving With Fertility Acupuncture to Treat Anovulation & Irregular Menstrual Cycles

After finishing 13 years of taking the pill, my menstrual cycle never returned. Fertility drugs triggered ovulation fairly easily to get pregnant with our first baby, but 3 years later still with anovulation and trying to have a second child, I had no response to several rounds of fertility drugs. The next step for me was hormone injections and IUI, which was more invasive than I wanted. My naturopath had recommended I try acupuncture with Monica, so I took a break from the fertility clinic to try that route instead. That was such a great decision!

Even after sharing my long history with anovulation, fertility drugs and uterine surgeries, Monica showed such optimism and confidence that she could get my menstrual cycle to return in a short amount of time. She thoroughly explained the reasoning behind her assessments and treatment methods, and answered all of my questions so I fully understood how we would work to restore balance to my hormone levels.

Monica's confidence and enthusiasm are contagious, and she made me feel very comfortable trying acupuncture for the first time. My menstrual cycles started occurring naturally for the first time in 17 years, and I was so thrilled to conceive shortly thereafter without fertility drugs! We recently gave birth to our second beautiful, healthy baby girl!

I repeatedly recommend Monica to all of my friends and family, for whatever health concerns they may have.

Back Pain & Hip Pain Post-Surgery

I had a spine fusion surgery in January 2012. The operation was satisfactory in terms of off-setting stenosis, but not so much for alleviating back and hip pain, unfortunately.  I cannot stand still for more than one hour without experiencing back pain. I finally sought help from Monica last fall… I am so glad I did! The intensity of the pain has decreased tremendously for as long as I see Monica every two-to- three weeks. When the interval gets longer, I start noticing the pain more frequently and intensely. One thing people have to keep in mind, though, is that acupuncture is not a magic or a quick fix to whatever the symptoms you have.  It takes time for your body to undergo biological changes. But once it starts happening, you do feel as if it is magic!

So…why Monica?  I say because she is focused on treatment. You’d say, “Isn’t that what all therapists do?” No. I mean, she really cares about YOU. She is also very confident with her skills and most importantly, she cares about what she does. I also believe that you need to create a positive relationship with your therapist for the treatment to work.  That’s why I encourage you to talk to Monica and find out for yourself. Happy healing!
